Native Harvesters of the Willamette Valley, History and Culture

  • Indy Commons 154 South Main Street Independence, OR, 97351 United States (map)

David Lewis, member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, OSU Assistant Professor and Tribal historian, will be giving a talk that will address the Kalapuya tribes and bands of the central Willamette valley. The Kalapuyans hunted and gathered for millennia before being moved onto the Grand Ronde Reservation. Natives from Grand Ronde Reservation annually harvested from settler farms in the valley. We will look at the circumstances of tribal removal to the reservation and tribal labor in agriculture in the 19th century.
